Today, the impact of cyber disasters far exceeds that caused by natural disasters. Tanium’s Morifumi Narahara noted that when AI analysis of natural disasters and cyber disasters was conducted across two axes comprising the probability and frequency of occurrence and the level of impact, the exploitation of high-risk vulnerabilities was identified as the greatest concern.

When a major incident occurs, management often pressures frontline teams to quickly announce that safety has been restored. However, IT departments often lack full visibility into systems outside their jurisdiction, and unauthorized use of IT resources, or shadow IT, is common. As there are no alerts on the PCs and servers under their management, frontline teams end up declaring safety based only on what is visible to them, with the true risk not being accurately communicated to management.

However, Narahara argued that the blame should not be placed on frontline teams. Instead, he asserted that the real problem lies in the limitations of legacy technologies, which are unable to detect shadow IT and high-risk vulnerabilities. He explained that the autonomous IT platform Tanium can solve this problem.

Leveraging patented technologies including its proprietary Linear Chain architecture, Tanium is capable of rapidly aggregating results from tens of thousands to millions of endpoints within seconds to minutes. If a risk is detected, remedial actions such as application of patches or uninstallation of vulnerable software can be implemented immediately. This visibility and control delivers the controllable security required by global organizations. The technology’s value has been recognized, with Tanium being adopted by seven of the top 10 US financial institutions and by all six organizations of the US military.

Leading companies in Europe and the United States use Tanium to constantly update their information on a daily or even hourly basis in line with rapidly changing infrastructure environments such as remote work, and to respond appropriately to threats. “It is important to start by thoroughly visualizing invisible risks, then continuously operate a cycle of management and remediation without letting down your guard,” emphasized Narahara.
