Powering Asias Future:
TMEICs Motor Drive Systems

Introduction

TMEIC Corporation (TMEIC) was established in 2003 through the integration of the industrial systems divisions of Toshiba Corporation and Mitsubishi Electric Corporation. Since then, TMEIC has supported the global development of industrial and social infrastructure by leveraging synergies in its core competencies of industrial systems, power electronics equipment, and motors. Building on the technological and business foundations inherited from its parent companies, TMEIC has expanded its business scope through initiatives such as entering the renewable energy sector and strengthening global operations.

TMEIC Asia Pte. Ltd. (TMEIC Asia), based in Singapore, serves as the regional headquarters in Southeast Asia. It oversees subsidiaries in Indonesia and Thailand and has liaison offices in Vietnam (Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City) and Taiwan (Kaohsiung), providing products, engineering, and other services to customers throughout Southeast Asia from six locations in five countries and regions.

As a company dedicated to supporting industrial and social infrastructure, TMEIC has embarked on a new initiative to achieve a carbon-neutral society. TMEIC has formulated a “Growth 20” growth strategy extending through to 2030 and is now moving into its next stage. Consolidated net sales reached 300 billion yen in fiscal 2022, double the initial amount at the time of the Companys inception, and continued to increase in fiscal 2023. Under its Growth 20 plan, TMEIC has set a business objective of achieving sales of 500 billion yen.

In recent years, the advancement of Society 5.0 and IoT technologies has spurred the increasing adoption of smart factory models in industrial plants. This trend focuses on enhancing the efficiency and productivity of entire industrial plants by collecting and analyzing data from various devices and equipment from their production lines and then integrating this data back into plant operations.

TMEIC offers a comprehensive range of motors, drive systems, power electronics products and services, as well as manufacturing equipment solutions used by key players in the oil and gas, general industrial, steel, paper pulp, and other industries. The TMEIC Groups products and services are available worldwide.

TMEICs large and medium-sized motor drive systems are available in capacities of up to 120 MVA, supporting high-speed operations that surpass commercial standards. In particular, the TMdrive-MVe3 is a high-voltage IGBT (power semiconductor device) inverter that provides variable-speed control of rotation speeds for high-voltage motors used by electric power companies, water treatment facilities, and in factory power fans, among others. This product contributes to the promotion of IoT and digitalization in factories and plants, improving productivity by maximizing performance, saving energy, and reducing CO2 emissions. The drive systems enhanced network connectivity, operational data visualization, improved accessibility, and high-precision motor control are all made possible through the inclusion of its IoT-compatible e3 control. In recent years, electricity prices have risen drastically due to the sharp rise in fuel prices. By installing and operating the TMdrive-MVe3, for example, at 1,100 kWh a year or for 8,000 hours, power consumption can be reduced by about half. This results in substantial reductions in both power costs and CO2 emissions (see figure).

Note: Example of TEPCOs emission factor in the “FY2021 Emission Factors by Electric Utility” published by the Ministry of the Environment of Japan. In actual calculations, use the default emission factor of 0.000555t-CO2/kWh specified in Ordinance No. 3 issued by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and the Ministry of the Environment in 2006, as well as the “emission factor by electric utility” for each electric utility in each fiscal year.

Building on a heritage of over 125 years of excellence and experience, TMEIC develops and supplies high-performance industrial motors that leverage the latest technology to customers around the world. It offers a wide range of products for a variety of applications, including induction motors, synchronous motors, ultra-high-speed motors, reluctance motors, high-efficiency top runner motors, and explosion-proof motors.

In particular, TMEICs hazardous area motors, used in demanding environments such as plants that manufacture flammable gases and materials, are exceptionally safe and reliable. They are certified by international certification bodies and deemed safe in most countries worldwide. All of TMEICs motor and drive systems are accredited, which saves time and unnecessary costs by eliminating the need for additional testing. The TMEIC Group also offers a wide range of products that meet the diverse needs of its customers regardless of their industry or application. This includes TEAAC (Totally Enclosed Air-to-Air Cooled) and other cooling systems in addition to products that comply with IP/IC standards.

Covering a wide range of industries, with a focus on the core industries of each country and region

TMEIC has continued to develop overseas business operations, carrying on the inroads achieved by Toshiba and Mitsubishi Electric and expanding them over the 20 years since its establishment. In the Southeast Asian market, overseen by TMEIC Asia, products and services are provided that meet the diverse needs of TMEIC customers, including European, North American, and local companies, as well as Japanese customers. As an example, TMEIC has been supplying products to oil and gas companies that play a central role in the upstream facilities of an international oil complex in Singapore, as well as to major petrochemical companies that operate downstream facilities.

The industries served encompass a wide range of sectors, including oil and gas, petrochemicals, cement, steel and non-ferrous metals, paper and pulp, chemicals, and food. These are all key infrastructure-related industries that support the foundational structures of countries and regions.

Kenichi Kato, Managing Director of TMEIC Asia, shared the following insights on the companys business strategy and outlook for the Southeast Asian region.

With TMEICs extensive lineup of high-performance products, the TMEIC Group offers the flexibility and responsiveness required to meet a diverse range of needs. In addition to supplying products as stand-alone units, TMEIC is also capable of thoroughly understanding the environments in which they will be used, providing them as integrated systems tailored to the customers actual usage situation. For instance, compressors and pumps supplied as core equipment for production lines will have different specifications for the motors required to operate the equipment, as well as different specifications for the devices that drive the motors, depending on the customers circumstances. Furthermore, I believe that our customers place a high level of trust in us because TMEIC not only plans, designs, and sell systems, but also provides careful and meticulous after-sales service and maintenance.

While we are confident in the quality of our products, in the unlikely event of a breakdown, the company places great importance on providing continuous support through services and suggestions that reflect customers needs. This includes proactively recommending regular inspections to ensure the stable operation of equipment and encouraging customers to systematically purchase any necessary spare parts in advance to minimize losses due to downtime.

Currently, Southeast Asia (ASEAN) boasts a population of 650 million people and is an economic zone with a high growth rate of 5% on average. Against this backdrop, TMEIC Asia is striving for further economic growth, which also includes environmental considerations, to achieve a carbon-neutral society by 2050. While there may be differences depending on areas of business, I expect that respective companies in each country and region will work together with the public and private sectors to increase their green energy initiatives and CO2 emission reduction efforts moving forward.

To remain flexible and respond to changes in both customer awareness and the market, TMEIC will focus on offering products and services that respect the global environment. As a member of the TMEIC Group, TMEIC Asia will also strive to improve product performance and bring more efficient, energy-saving products to market.

TMEIC Asia will continue to support the core industries that underpin the infrastructure of Southeast Asian countries and regions. From a medium- to long-term perspective, the company aims to continue contributing as a key player in the realization of safe and healthy social development.
