Decarbonization and Growth: Advancing Both Through Green Transformation While Ensuring Energy Security

On the 25th, Nikkei Inc. will hold a kickoff meeting for the FY2026 NIKKEI Green Transformation (GX) Conference, an initiative promoting GX in Japan. Participating companies are committed to working together to deepen discussions and engage in public outreach, with the goals of realizing a decarbonized society, ensuring the stable supply and security of energy, and enhancing industrial competitiveness through shifts in demand structures and the creation of new markets.

Opening of the FY2026 NIKKEI GX onference

The environment surrounding green transformation (GX) continues to evolve rapidly. Japan is introducing new rules and frameworks, including sustainability disclosure requirements and an emissions trading system. While efforts to achieve harmony with nature and realize a circular economy are also well underway, the creation of new markets and shifts in consumer behaviors have emerged as key GX-related challenges. At the same time, decarbonization efforts also face growing headwinds, such as the United States’ withdrawal from the Paris Agreement, an international framework for addressing climate change.

One growing concern is energy security. Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, and the United States and Israel attacked Iran in 2026, followed by Iran effectively blockading the Strait of Hormuz in retaliation. As geopolitical risks continue to rise, efforts are underway to reassess decarbonization and renewable energy strategies in terms of energy security.

Nikkei Inc. launched the NIKKEI GX Conference in April 2025. After the Japanese government declared the goal of achieving carbon neutrality by reducing greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050, Nikkei repositioned the NIKKEI Net-Zero Project, which it launched in FY2021, to expand its efforts beyond decarbonization to encompass the stable supply and security of energy as well as the bolstering of Japan’s industrial competitiveness.

The Nikkei GX Conference

The previous year’s venue

Participants, comprising companies taking leading roles in advancing GX to transition toward industrial and social structures centered on clean energy, have been engaging in discussions on a wide range of issues with policymakers and experts. The outcomes of these discussions have been broadly reported in Japan and overseas through Nikkei Group media outlets, including The Nikkei, The Nikkei Online Edition, Financial Times, and the specialized digital platform NIKKEI GX, as well as through symposiums and seminars held at the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

In FY2026, the NIKKEI GX Conference will continue to promote discussion and public outreach on the initiatives and policies needed to realize GX, with guidance from expert advisors. Activities include symposiums, executive meetings, and subcommittee sessions focused on specific fields, with coverage and related content disseminated through Nikkei Inc.’s various media platforms. All involved remain committed, with the aim of realizing a decarbonized society and creating a freer and more prosperous world for all people, both now and in the future.

Taking on the Challenge of Decarbonization Through Co-Creation with Society

Realizing a decarbonized society starts with transforming the shipping and logistics industries that underpin global supply chains. To that end, we are developing next-generation vessels powered primarily by ammonia, aiming to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. At the same time, we are driving innovation and co-creation with a wide range of stakeholders through GX initiatives that leverage the unique characteristics of the shipping industry. One example is the world’s first floating offshore data center powered entirely by renewable energy, now being advanced toward practical implementation through a consortium of partner companies. Moving forward, we will continue to work closely with all stakeholders committed to accelerating GX across the shipping industry and society at large.
